Repubblika is calling for the resignation of Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg after Darren Debono refused to identify all of his accomplices in the 2010 HSBC armed robbery.

The NGO on Friday evening held a protest outside the AG's office in Valletta.

Darren Debono, known as it-Topo, sensationally pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 2010 HSBC heist on the eve of the beginning of the trial by jury of Vincent Muscat in connection with the same heist. Debono was sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for his involvement in the heist, but had charges for attempted murder on policemen dropped to attempted grievous bodily harm as per a plea bargain with the Attorney General. But, when being taken to testify before the courts, he refused to identify all of his accomplices in the 2010 HSBC armed robbery. He has been arraigned over this refusal.

Repubblika President Robert Aquilina remarked that the NGO did not take to the streets earlier as they wanted to give the benefit of the doubt.

"We wanted to give the Attorney General a chance to explain plea bargain decision. We wanted to give the Commissioner of Police a chance to tell us what his involvement was in this obscene decision. We wanted to give them a chance to explain to us how they thought justice would benefit from the Attorney General's deal with Topo," he said.

He added that they waited until the day Darren Debono was ought to testify to understand what the benefit of this plea deal would be.

However, Darren Debono refused to testify about all his accomplices, despite benefitting from the plea deal as he feared for his son's wellbeing. Although the magistarte warned him many times during the sitting, he was rearrested upon her request.

"Yesterday, in Court, all the people realized that justice did not benefit at all from the deal that the Attorney General made with Topo. Yesterday, everyone realised that the Attorney General had saved this criminal from a 20-year prison sentence just to keep him quiet."

During the protest, Aquilina also adressed Police Commisioner Angelo Gafa, where he said that the longer he stayed silent, the more questions will arise regarding his position on the whole situation.
