Cassola asks for clear explanations on sexual harassment case at AFM

Arnold Cassola, independent candidate on the 10th and 11th districts, has demanded clear explanations from AFM Commander Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi and Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg with regard to a story of sexual harassment that concerns an army officer.

A Maltese army officer has sent sexually explicit photos to his female victims, apart from insistent text messages. These photos were taken on AFM premises, Cassola said.

A report to the police was made by the victim. The victim's phone was collected by the police. The immediate superior of this soldier was also informed of what was happening. The AFM Brigadier was informed too. And these reports were made known to the AG, Victoria Buttigieg, Cassola added

Yet no action was taken by anyone, Cassola said. This was completely unacceptable. The victim in this case has been left to feel helpless and without any hope of justice. Why has no action been taken against this army officer? Is the political affiliation of this officer who is close to the Labour Party the reason for this serious lack of action?, Cassola asked.

In the “Me too” era it is completely unacceptable that a press conference needs to be held so that action may possibly be taken.

With their inaction, two important state institutions such as the AGs office and the Army are preventing justice from taking its course.

They are failing to make Maltese women feel safe, Cassola said.

Both institutions must give us clear explanations why they have not taken action in this serious case of sexual harassment by a supposed servant of the state.
