PM, Opposition Leader submit nomination for election

Saturday, 5 March 2022, 14:00 Last update: about 3 years ago

Both Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech submitted their nomination to contest the election earlier today.

It will be the first time that the two major parties will be led into an election by new leaders.

Both made it to the top post in their respective party in 2020, Abela replacing Joseph Muscat after the latter resigned in the wake of arrests made in connection with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, and Grech after a group of PN MPs forced an election to oust incumbent Adrian Delia.

Both Abela and Grech will contest one district in common, the fifth, which places them head to head in a traditionally Labour area.

Abela will then also contest the second district, which was previously contested by Muscat, and Grech has opted for the 11th district, where Simon Busuttil contested as PN leader in the past election.
