PN governments failed to increase pensions and COLA – PL

In the 21 years of governing, the PN has failed to increase pensions and the full Cost of Living Adjustment has not been granted, said Minister for Social Justice Michael Falzon addressing a press conference.

PL whip Glenn Bedingfield said that the PL government has improved minimum pensions as well as that of widows. He said that in this legislature, all pensions were increased.

“This government has fixed many anomalies and introduced many schemes with regards pensions,” Bedingfield said.

The PL said that the Nationalist party is promising what has already existed, such as the proposal which gives the opportunity to all pensioners which have enough social contributions to continue working until they reach retirement age, and receive pensions based on how many years before retirement.

This measure has existed since 2016, and if a pensioner continues working beyond the age of 61, pensions will increase to up to 23% each year, said the PL.

The proposal which will allow persons who do not have enough social contributions to pay part of them has also existed since 2015, it said.

The PL said that there is uncertainty with the PN’s proposals and “all the Nationalist party has to offer is with terms and conditions.”

The Labour government has in recent years increased pensioner’s incomes by more than 20%, as well as promising additional COLA if there is an extraordinary inflation, which will amount to an increase of €15 a week, the PL said. It continued to say that the PL guarantees no terms and conditions for pensioners.
