Price of Maltese bread expected double - Peter Agius

Wednesday, 16 March 2022, 17:22 Last update: about 3 years ago

The price of traditional Maltese bread is expected to double, PN spokesperson Peter Aguis said on Wednesday.

He revealed how sources from within the industry told him that wheat prices are expected to rise by 60%. He said that this will automatically double the price of Maltese bread.

Aguis said that Putin's invasion of Ukraine is threatening wheat provisions.

He added that when the price of wheat increased by 12% a few months ago, the price of Maltese bread also rose by 10c.

He said that with the current high cost of living problem, this increase will put more pressure on low income earners and pensioners.

The PN, he said, proposes the introduction of a mechanism to establish a fixed temporary price for Bread, so as to prepare for the expected crisis.

He added that he has personally written to the European commission, advising that various countries such as Romania and Bulgaria are restricting wheat importation to Malta, something which goes against European principles.
