Independent candidate Arnold Cassola has reported the Prime Minister and Finance Minister to the Electoral Commission, saying they were breaching the electoral law.
The distribution of cheques to compensate for the cost of living on the eve of an election amounts to “corrupt practices”, Cassola charged in his letter.
Both Robert Abela and Clyde Caruana are members of what is now a caretaker government and have no right to distribute money during a campaign for an election in which they will also be candidates, Cassola said.
He requested the commission to take immediate action, saying that his complaint is being passed on the OSCE/OIHDR election expert team which are monitoring the election in Malta.
