Getting to know Simon Farrugia... biographies, feasts and football

Simon Farrugia always wanted to become a journalist, and he has fulfilled his dream, working for TVM and also as a contributor to The Malta Independent.

He loves to read autobiographies, enjoys traditional Maltese feasts and says life was much simpler in the past.

But who are the people who he would want to have dinner with?

What was the last book you read?

A Quality of Madness – A life of Marcelo Bielsa

Who is your favourite author?

No particular author since I love to read autobiographies

What was the last film you watched?

Kong Skull Island

Which film have you seen multiple times and enjoyed every time you saw it?

Life is Beautiful

Who is your favourite actor/actress?

Roberto Benigni

What is your favourite TV series?

The Good Doctor

What is your favourite game or sport to watch and play?

Football

Which team do you support?

Leeds United

Which song would you sing at a karaoke night?

November Rain – Guns & Roses

Who is your favourite singer/band?

Pink Floyd

 

Which show/event would you like to attend/have attended?

I have attended Champions League finals and even a Euro Final. My wish is attending a World Cup Final

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

Water, fire and a comfortable mattress

Sight (Long distance)

What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?

Kangaroo Meat

What is that one thing you could not go a day without?

Traditional Maltese festa celebrations

Funnily enough I don’t like ice-creams

Pizza Capricciosa

Black though some don’t consider it a colour

What is your favourite pasta dish?

I prefer spaghetti amongst all types of pasta with Basilico sauce being my favourite

What is your favourite cartoon show?

The Simpsons

 

What did you like to do most during the summer holidays?

Playing in the streets of Vittoriosa and preparing for the Feast of the Patron of the City, Saint Lawrence

What career did you see yourself in when you were young?

I always wanted to become a sports journalist and during my school days I used to make commentaries in between lessons.

What is your best childhood memory?

Saturday and Sunday afternoons listening to English and Italian football on radio

Did you learn how to ride a bike? 

Unfortunately no since I always lost my balance

Who was your super hero?

My Dad – was and still is

Which toy do you wish to have kept?

A motorized airplane which for the early seventies was a luxury

What subject did you excel in at school?

Maths

What subject did you dislike the most in school?

Biology and Arabic

Was there some family tradition that was never missed?

Christmas Lunch and opening of presents though in 2009 I had to miss it out since my son Daniel was born on Christmas Day

What are the best values you owe to your parents?

Integrity, determination and tolerance

 

What would you change about yourself if you could?

Stubbornness

What really makes you angry?

Dishonest people

Half full

Are you a sore loser?

Yes, I am

What is your biggest regret?

That due to the Covid restrictions I had to cancel my trip to Leeds to watch my favourite team get promoted to the Premier League after a sixteen-year absence

What’s the first thing you look for in a partner and/or friend?

Sincerity

What is your greatest fear?

Fighting for breath

What is your life motto?

Marching on Together – because we are in it together

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

Don’t try to fool me

What's one thing that can instantly make your day better?

A pint of cold beer

 

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you do or buy?

Donate part of it to the people in need and invest in a small business

If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Marcelo Bielsa, Roberto Benigni, Angela Merkel and the late Karl Chircop who was a good friend of mine

If you could bring one person back from the dead who’d it be?

Uncle Alfred who died following an unfortunate accident when still an 11-year-old and I was not born yet

If you could time travel, when and where would you go?  

In the sixties when life was tougher but much simpler

If you could relive one moment in your life, which would it be?

The birth of my son Daniel

If you could live anywhere outside Malta, where would it be?

United Kingdom or Australia

Octopus stew or in garlic

Not that I’m so curious but do spirits exist?
