PN calls on government to seriously tackle nurse shortage

Monday, 11 April 2022, 14:59 Last update: about 3 years ago

Quoting statistics from the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) which said that some 120 nurses had resigned in 2021, the Nationalist Party on Monday stressed the importance of the government to tackle the issue as soon as possible.

While keeping in mind the excellent quality of health care Malta has to offer, the PN said that the government cannot keep ignoring the situation month after month.

“Thanks to the professionals in the health industry, Malta has a health care system worth boasting about, but the lack of action by the government when faced with constant warnings by the unions representing these professionals is causing stressing factors within this same health system.”

PN called for proper investment in order to make any profession in health care more attractive and to keep the already working professionals employed there.

“The government is investing only in the short term and they are managing the health care system according to whatever the most recent crisis may be. This is not the way to improve the already existing structures and to also improve the working conditions professionals face themselves with.”

In their closing statement, the PN said that with a growing population, the problems need addressing now before it is too late.
