Ryan Schembri, the boss of the More Supermarkets chain, has been arrested in Scotland, according to Net News.

Schembri fled from Malta in 2014, leaving debts that reportedly reach some €40 million.

According to the report, Schembri was arrested on an arrest warrant issued by Interpol several years back. It is understood that Maltese police officers were in Scotland for the arrest.

After leaving Malta, Schembri had first lived with his partner in Dubai, eventually moving to London and then Scotland.

Apart from his connection to the supermarket debts, which are linked to the murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop, Schembri could also face money laundering charges.

Chircop, who was murdered in 2015, had loaned €750,000 to Schembri, who is a cousin of former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri.

Another debtor was Adrian Agius, who had been arrested in 2017 in connection with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

A Maltese police statement on Friday evening read that a Maltese man has been extradited from Scotland to be interrogated by the Financial Crimes Department.

While the police did not name the man being extradited, it is believed to be Schembri.
