‘Work to implement FATF action plan appreciated by many’ - Foreign Affairs Minister

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Ian Borg said that works are ongoing to implement the action plan agreed upon with the FATF, and that the work is being appreciated by the Council of Europe.

"In the last two years our country has undergone many very important reforms and changes, which continue to improve our systems, strengthen the rule of law and the way important appointments are made," Borg said, addressing the 132nd session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Italy.

He added that this work has been appreciated by many, especially by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić.

Borg also held several bilateral meetings, where he referred to the fact that Malta will be submitting its name to the election for a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council, held on 9 June.

Borg spoke with UK Secretary of State Elizabeth Truss, discussing the role and importance of the Commonwealth in light of current global challenges.

Topics such as the priorities of the Presidency of the European Union were also discussed during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Lipavský, who is now due to chair the Council.

Borg also spoke with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Foreign Minister of Moldova Nicu Popescu, Foreign Minister of Georgia's Ilia Darchiashvili, Foreign Minister of Andorra Maria Ubach i Font, Foreign Minister of San Marino Luca Beccari and Foreign Minister of Iceland Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir.
