The three men who were injured in last weekend’s fireworks complex explosion have been discharged from hospital, the pyrotechnical society they form part of announced on social media on Wednesday night.

The three men – aged 25, 29, and 60 – were hospitalised between Saturday and Sunday after an explosion at the fireworks complex belonging to the Soċjeta Piroteknika 15 ta' Awwissu in Mosta.

11 people were at the fireworks complex, which is situated in Dwejra – between Mosta and Mgarr, when it was rocked by a major explosion on Saturday.

Two of them were hospitalised immediately after the explosion, with one believed to have sustained a broken leg while running away from the complex and another believed to have sustained some burns.

A third man – the 60-year-old – was hospitalised on Sunday at 2:30am.

However all three have now been discharged from hospital, with the pyrotechnical society saying that they are now back with their families.

“Massive thanks goes to all of the public sector workers and professionals who have assisted us with all we’ve needed, including the police, soldiers, civil protection department, nurses, doctors, and other experts,” the society said.

The society also thanked all those who showed solidarity and moral support with them in this difficult time and thanked their patron – the Virgin Mary – for “keeping us under her eye.”

It is understood that some fireworks which were drying outside in the sun as part of the production process of the fireworks were the cause of the first explosion on Saturday afternoon, which then scattered debris into the surrounding areas, causing some fields to also catch fire.

A second, major explosion, around 45 minutes later was believed to be one of the complex’s smaller firework stores.  The complex’s main stores, which are surrounded by fortified walls and which were built in accordance to the latest safety standards for such complexes, was untouched.

The complex was rebuilt after it was rocked by an explosion in 2010, a mere two days before the locality’s titular feast of St. Mary on 15 August.  One man – Mario Dimech – lost his life on that day.
