Enemalta recorded nearly €36 million loss in 2020 – PN

Friday, 10 June 2022, 17:55 Last update: about 3 years ago

Enemalta registered a loss of nearly €36 million in 2020, the Nationalist Party has said.

"After much pressure and a number of Parliamentary questions, Enemalta today published its audited accounts for 2020, nearly a year late," the PN said.

In its accounts, "the board says that the main reason for this loss is that for a few months it used the interconnector a lot less and bought more from Electrogas and Shanghai Electric, due to an incident on the Interconnector."

"This confirms all that the PN has said regarding how the government has its hands tied and cannot truly buy energy from the cheapest sources," the party said.

"The board confirmed that the average price during 2020 for the interconnector was €46/MW, nearly half the 85/MWh that the minister said we were paying Electrogas now."

The PN also alleged certain conflicts of interest. It said that Salvu Sant sits on the Board of Delimara 3 and was also on the Enemalta board that year. It also said that another member of the Delimara 3 board, Song Yu, is the Deputy Executive Director Finance and Legal of Enemalta.

The PN said that Shanghai Electric reported a profit of €15 million in 2020 from the BWSC.

The loss of Enemalta funds, the PN said, happened long before the gas price increase or the effects of the war in Ukraine.

"While making this loss, the leadership of Enemalta was comfortable in giving €105,000 contract to Monica Farrugia, a member of the PL executive, without a public call."

The PN statement was signed by PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut.

"One asks what the real reason for the resignation of the chairman just seven months after his appointment was."
