Lack of action on Comino abuse should lead to resignations – Jason Micallef

Saturday, 11 June 2022, 15:18 Last update: about 3 years ago

The head of the Labour Party’s media and chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency said that the authorities’ lack of action on abuse in Comino should lead to resignations.

In a Facebook post, Jason Micallef said that the government appoints authorities to regulate against abuse and illegalities committed on public shores.

What is happening in Comino is “a blatant abuse against the natural beauty” of the island, which should be afforded the best possible protection, being a Natura 2000 site. It is an abuse against the people who have the “sacrosanct right” to enjoy a day at Comino.

Micallef said that like the majority of Maltese he is fed up by the lack of action taken by the concerned authorities, their heads and their officials.

The protest carried out today by a group of activists should shame “the authorities and whoever leads them”. “You know who you are,” he said. “You have let down the government who appointed you to carry out your work, and more than this you have let down the people of Malta and Gozo.”

The lack of action should lead to resignations, he said.

This morning, members of the Moviment Graffitti removed deckchairs and umbrellas at Blue Lagoon, Comino in a symbolic event aimed to raise awareness on how public beaches are being taken over by operators.
