Alex Galea crowned champion of Malta Formula Racing League

The MFRL (Malta Formula Racing League) Season 2 came to a close last Wednesday 15th June 2022 in Abu Dhabi. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 races took part on the same night, with Alex “Lessyu” Galea in the Alfa Romeo taking the chequered flag for the last time this season in Tier 1, while Brandon “Sideways Sam” Mercieca in the Williams took the other in Tier 2.

The final of the 14 Tier 1 races of the season was bittersweet. With only eight points separating the top 2, Liam “IlluminatiCat” Scerri in the Mclaren needed to win and Alex Galea to finish third or lower to snatch the championship at the end. This set up a mouth-watering showdown for the final race of the season. However, this was short lived, as, after an early safety car, Scerri went too early on the throttle, spun out, and ended up in the wall and out of the race. This handed the championship to Galea without needing to finish the race. With the pressure of the championship lifted, Galea surged to victory, with his teammate Matthew “Raforis” Schembri in second place, earning the Alfas maximum points in the final race, with Galea taking the fastest lap as well. Ian “Trifa” Arpa completes the podium in the Aston Martin.

Last season’s runner up Aaron “Debbs” Debattista in the Williams finished fourth, while Vincenzo “Runza” Runza in the Haas finished fifth. A good showing from Nathan Magro in the Mercedes puts him sixth, while Luke “Finot” Calleja in the Ferrari finished seventh. Maya “b0bz” Laferla in the Alpha Tauri finished eighth, and Aaron “Ronskins” Dimech in the Alpine and Sheldon “SheldonScott” Muscat in the Red Bull rounds up the top ten. It was a roller coaster of a season, and well done to all 20 Tier 1 drivers who took part and made it unforgettable!

The Tier 2 race was close from start to finish, with Kris “Xkubett” Camilleri in the Alpine battling with Brandon Mercieca throughout the whole race for the win. However, Mercieca proved too good and kept ahead of the Alpine to secure his 11th win of the championship. Further down the standings, George “Lewisaw” Lewis completed the podium in the other Alpine, Brandon “Dragon” Graham finished fourth in the Aston Martin, Albert “Bertu” Galea comes up in fifth, Neil “Enderneil” Falzon finished sixth, while Luke “Joker” Caruana and Fran “Logikaa” Scicluna both ended up out of the race in separate incidents. Although only eight drivers took part in the final Tier 2 race, all 18 Tier 2 drivers deserve congratulations on a great season!

Special congratulations must go to Alex Galea and Brandon Mercieca for winning the Tier 1 and Tier 2 championships respectively. This makes Galea the champion for two seasons in a row, while Mercieca becomes the first ever winner for Tier 2.

Congratulations as well to Alex Galea and Matthew Schembri for winning the constructors championship with Alfa Romeo, while the same must be said for Brandon Mercieca and Jacob “SpaceX” Bellizzi in the Williams.

Finally, we would like to thank all the drivers who took part this season. This special season could not have happened without them, and we look forward to many more to come!

MFRL would also like to take the opportunity to announce that Season 3 will start on the 3rd of August 2022 on the NEW F1 22 game on PC. Applications are currently open, so be sure to check us out on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch to apply!
