VisitMalta will sponsor five Maltese football clubs which will be playing in UEFA European competitions in the coming months, with a sum of 10,000 being handed to each club.

The clubs in question are last season’s league winners Hibernians, Floriana, Hamrun Spartans, and Gzira United and the women’s team of Birkirkara FC.

The VisitMalta will be placed on the back of the kit shirts of each of these clubs as they travel to face foreign opposition in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League, and UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Hibernians will be playing in Ireland against Shamrock Rovers, Floriana will be playing in Moldova against Petroclub Hincesti, Hamrun Spartans will play in Armenia against Alashkert, while Gzira United will play in Andorra against Atletic Club D’Escaldes.

Birkirkara’s women’s team is yet to be drawn against an opponent.

The financial support to the club was announced in a press conference by Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo, Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef, and Malta Football Association President Bjorn Vassallo.

Bartolo said that he was pleased to see that besides waving the flags of their respective clubs, all the clubs will be waving the flag of the Maltese country on foreign soil.

Micallef said that this is one of many MTA initiatives to invest in sports, particularly in football, so to attract tourism to the country through the media coverage which the sport is given across Europe and beyond.
