A Malta Freeport Terminals Operator was seriously injured this morning while carrying out a routine container loading operation on board a vessel, the Malta Freeport said in a statement. 

Emergency services were informed immediately and the company nurse was on site within minutes to attend to the employee. 

Police identified the man as a 44-year-old from Mqabba, and said that the accident happened at around 10am. 

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance where he is currently receiving treatment.  He was certified as suffering from serious injuries. 

Duty magistrate Noel Bartolo is leading an inquiry, while police investigations are also ongoing. 

The Malta Freeport said that its own inquiry is also ongoing and said it would issue updates at the appropriate time.
