A Malta Red Cross lifeguard braves rough seas on Sunday to save a man from drowning in Sliema.

The rescue was caught on camera and shared to social media by the Malta Red Cross, who praised the lifeguard for performing the rescue even though he was not obliged to do so.

It took place on Sunday afternoon in Fond Ghadir in Sliema.

This is because the beach was flying a double red flag, which signifies that the sea is dangerous to swim in.  Lifeguards are not obliged to perform rescues during double red flags, the Malta Red Cross said.

“However, notwithstanding, the lifeguard on duty jumped in the water and saved the individual from drowning,” they said.

The Red Cross Water Rescue team also assisted during this incident.

“Help us help you, follow the flags and don't place yourself in unnecessary risk,” the NGO said.
