Special session for PM’s questions among new PN parliamentary proposals

Friday, 15 July 2022, 12:07 Last update: about 3 years ago

A special weekly session for Prime Minister’s questions is among a number of proposals put forward by the Nationalist Party to improve Parliament’s work.

This proposal has been inspired by a similar procedure in the British Parliament.

PN deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs David Agius and PN Whip and Parliamentary Group Secretary Robert Cutajar sent the proposals, which were put forward by the party at a meeting of the Standing Committee for Parliamentary Affairs, to Deputy Prime Minister Chris Faerne.

The PN is also proposing that the session where the Opposition can present its motion is held every two weeks, rather than once every three to six months.

It is also calling on the Government to to set up without further delay a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, which like the Public Accounts Committee will have a government majority but would be chaired by an Opposition MP. This has also been proposed by GRECO.

A committee also needs to be set up to update the current standard orders.

The PN said it has also been calling on the government for several years to provide the Opposition with the necessary support and resources, both human and physical, so that it is able to perform its duty better.

It is also proposing that the Ombudsman’s reports are submitted to Parliament and be discussed in plenary on a date decided by both sides of the House.

Additionally, the PN is also proposing to open a childcare service for MPs and Parliament staff.
