‘Attorney General is complicit in covering up Pilatus Bank scandal’ – PN

Monday, 25 July 2022, 12:21 Last update: about 3 years ago

Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg is complicit in covering up the Pilatus Bank scandal, and she must shoulder responsibility and resign, the PN said in a statement on Monday.

PN Spokesperson for Justice Karol Aquilina said that the Nationalist Party notes how it is unacceptable that a person who has an International Arrest Warrant ordered by Magistrate Ian Farrugia has still not been arrested, despite still being in the country.

Aquilina said that this confirms that the AG is an accomplice in the government’s plan to cover up the Pilatus Bank scandal.

The statement came after Repubblika President Robert Aquilina filed a challenge in court against the AG and the Commissioner of Police on Monday morning for failing to execute the arrest former Pilatus Bank operations supervisor Mehmet Tazli even though a warrant had been signed in March 2021 and Tazli had been in the country – and even testified in court – after that.

He said that the AG has known for more than a year and a half that the senior officer of the bank should have been arrested as the copy of the magisterial inquiry was received in December 2020.

“What is worse, the senior officer of the Pilatus Bank testified before the Criminal Court in October 2021 and the AG treated him like any other witness, failing to arrest him,” the statement said.

Aquilina said that the AG is abusing the Constitutional Independence she enjoys, and her serious shortcomings are continuing to weaken the institution of the AG, leading to bad administration of Justice.

The PN called on the AG to immediately resign from her post.
