The roads agency said Monday that the current phase of works that caused widespread traffic will be completed by the end of the week and the entire project will be finished before 11 August.

Roadworks being carried out on the main carriageway between Pieta and Floriana led to traffic chaos on Monday morning for many motorists passing through the centre of the country.

Parts of the northbound carriageway of Triq L-Indipendenza between Pieta and Floriana were closed by Infrastructure Malta for maintenance and resurfacing works on Monday morning.

In a statement, Infrastructure Malta said it is carrying out the final works of a maintenance project in Triq l-Indipendenza.

“After resurfacing the lane in the direction to Valletta last year, in the past few weeks the agency has completed necessary works on underground services, including strengthening of a new anti-flooding in these areas and new electricity cables. In the coming days, Infrastructure Malta will complete this project by strengthening the foundations of the lane in the direction of Tal-Pietà and re-paving it with asphalt.”

IM said that the phase that started today is planned to be finished by the end of this week, while the entire project is planned to be finished before August 11th.

“The works being carried out by the agency in this street and its surroundings have been planned for after the school season and also not to clash with mass activities that were scheduled throughout the past few weeks on the Floriana Granaries,” it said.

The agency said that, over the past few hours, it has worked together with Transport Malta to “reduce the inconvenience created earlier today by opening new temporary lanes.”

The works will be carried out at all hours of the day, including night time, in order to be completed within the scheduled period, it said.
