Malta Formula Racing League back next week

Thursday, 28 July 2022, 11:10 Last update: about 3 years ago

The Malta Formula Racing League (MFRL) is back next week with the 3rd season! With our numbers growing, there will be two races held every week starting on the 2nd and 3rd of August. Tuesdays at 9pm are dedicated to the Tier 2 drivers, while Wednesdays at 9pm shall hold the Tier 1 races.

To qualify for the third season, drivers had two weeks to put in time trials in three tracks: the newly added Miami track, Barcelona, Spain, and the Red Bull Ring in Austria. These time trials were held between the 1st and 15th of July and, after the qualifying was over, the times were tallied together for the final standings. The top 20 drivers will take part in the Tier 1 league, while the next 20 will take part in the Tier 2 league. Below is the list containing the full results from the qualifying sessions.

Each race will be hotly contested, with two-time MFRL and reigning champion Alex “Lessyu” Galea looking to make it three in a row. However, there will be no easy races as each driver will be looking to spoil the fun for Galea, with a number of drivers looking to take that top spot, including last season’s Tier 2 champion Brandon “Sideways Sam” Mercieca. Mercieca, qualifying for Season 3 with an impressive half a second lead over both Kris “Xkubett” Camilleri and Galea, to have a go at the championship himself. Although these three drivers seem to be the favourites for the title, further down the qualifying standings, the rest of the top 10 cannot be taken lightly either. Aaron “Debbs” Debattista will be eager to put aside his misfortunes from Seasons 1 and 2 and go for another title challenge, while Matthias “tr1x” Lufi, Sheldon “SheldonScott” Muscat, and Matthew “Raforis” Schembri will definitely be in the fight as well. Last season’s runner up Liam “IlluminatiCat” Scerri will also be looking for redemption after his heartbreak in last season’s final race, while Aaron “Ronskins” Dimech and Ian “Trifa” Arpa will be looking to spring a surprise in the top 10.

Moving onto Tier 2, Maya “b0bz” Laferla will be looking to take Tier 2 by storm, as unfortunately she had to drop down to this Tier due to not being able to attend races on Wednesdays. Nathan Magro will be looking to cement his position as well, after a strong end to Season 2. Natanael “Spooner” Aquilina and Albert “Bertu” Galea will also be looking to reach the higher echelons of Tier 1, while newcomers Gregory “Greg” Maggi, Michael “Dwardu” Pace, and Meon “Meonn” Grima will be looking to introduce themselves strongly. Wayne “Cowabunga” Micallef, Clifton Piscopo, and Luke “Joker22” Caruana will be looking to prove themselves and make themselves contenders for high rankings as well.

At the end of the season, the top 3 ranking drivers from Tier 2 will be promoted to Tier 1 for the following season, while the bottom 3 of Tier 1 will drop down to Tier 2. This means that each and every driver will have something to fight for, even if they may not be fighting at the top in Tier 1. Below is the schedule for both Tiers.

Races will be streamed on our twitch channel “MaltaFormulaRacingLeague”, so please do give it a follow to never miss a race!
