The second edition of the Animal Honours Awards will take place on 4 October, to recognise the formidable work done by volunteers for animal rights.

Commissioner for Animal Welfare Alison Bezzina spoke at a press conference regarding the awards show, saying that the awards will reward those who have worked and dedicated their time to helping animals.

Controversy by prominent animal activists such as Animal Rights activist Moira Delia have brought forward the concerns that the funds and resources for these awards could be better spent on finding spaces for abandoned pets and funds to help safely confiscate abused animals.

The Office of the Animal Commissioner had agreed with the sentiment and Bezzina said that the awards will be a symbolic one, whereby the funds will be used to directly help animals whilst still recognizing the positive work done by volunteers.

Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Welfare Alicia Bugeja Said said that 450 nominations of individuals who have given their hearts towards helping animals came in before the deadline.

“It is the government's responsibility to continue to award these people, whilst investing in larger spaces for shelters,” Bugeja Said added.

Bugeja Said invited the public to participate in the voting of the awards.

Minister for Animal Welfare Anton Refalo reiterated that good work has been done by the volunteers and that the wellness of animals is very important. He said that government is committed to continue and improve the situation with regards to shelters.
