Former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici’s health has improved to the point that he is on the verge of being discharged from hospital, Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Wednesday.
Mifsud Bonnici was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital on Sunday 21 August and was in critical condition for a short period before then stabilising.
Prime Minister Abela said on Wednesday that he had spoken to Mifsud Bonnici and was happy to see that he was feeling better to the point that he is expected to be discharged from hospital.
Mifsud Bonnici served as Prime Minister between 1984 and 1987, succeeding Labour party stalwart Dom Mintoff.
The PL lost the 1987 election under Mifsud Bonnici's leadership, although he remained party leader until 1992. Mifsud Bonnici is now 89 years old.
