Prime Minister Robert Abela has not yet taken action on the Transport Malta corruption case, and Transport Malta had a mechanism in place which was working only to make things easier for the few, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said Wednesday.

Giving comments on the PN media NET FM, Grech said that Abela has yet to find out or reveal which Minister was concerned with the corruption case in Transport Malta.

Transport Malta has been recently linked to a driving theory test corruption case, which involved three officials who were accused of helping learner drivers cheat in the exam. At least one unnamed government minister has been linked to the case.

Grech said that the people who were helped by the officials could be a potential danger on the road. He said that the minister concerned has abused the power that they had, and 48 hours have passed and Abela still has no information regarding the case.

Grech also questioned whether the same abuse of power is being done in the Planning Authority. He asked whether Abela, who was the PA’s lawyer, has done similar actions to arrange permits for his own properties.

The PN leader accused Abela of concerning himself only with the few close friends, rather than addressing the issue of a decreasing quality of life.

“Quality of life is decreasing significantly for those with lower incomes, those on pensions or benefits. People are having to shift their purchasing powers and have started being careful with what they spend. Meanwhile, government is still splurging money on millions of direct orders and uncontrollable construction,” he said.

He said that the educational budget for the University of Malta should increase as demand is increasing, rather than cut €1.1 million from the University budget as part of the government’s attempt to tame deficit.

“We should be investing in our education and students. Government should cut investments towards persons of trust and make decisions on our hospitals, which is costing us that same amount. Abela is not considering education as important to the country,” he said.

Grech said that with regards to the recreational cannabis reform, there is an authority which does not function, and there is no enforcement in place. He said that government was not clear, nor did it have a plan with regards to e-scooter problem, which have become an inconvenience and a danger in the streets.

Grech said that the PN has studied and consulted the difficulties of the e-scooters, and came out with a number of initiatives to address the issue and improve quality of life.

With regards to the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, Grech dismissed claims that celebrations were being scaled down, and said that the PN will announce the activities of the important event.
