European championship: Late surge against Slovenia takes Malta into historic final for 13th place

A fourth session surge gave the Maltese national waterpolo team a 13-9 win over Slovenia to book a place in the final for 13th place at the European championships.

It was the first ever win during regular time for Malta – the only other victory had arrived against Turkey on penalties – and it will guarantee the best ever position in the competition.

Malta’s best ever was the 15th place; this win gives Malta at least the 14th place.

The game was tight for three sessions, by which time the score was 8-8.

But, in the last session, the Maltese national side pushed forward to score five goals against the one by Slovenia for a total 13-9 score.

Malta's goals were scored by Dino Zammit (3), Matthew Zammit (2), Nicholas Bugelli (2), Liam Galea (2), Ben Plumtpon (2) and one each from Andreas Galea and James Gambin.

Goalkeeper Jake Tanti saved a penalty towards the end of the match.

Malta will be playing against Germany on Tuesday for the 13th place.
