Government announces plan to increase number of judiciary members by four

The Justice Ministry has announced that it will increase the number of members of the judiciary, by adding two new judges and two new magistrates.

"The aim, is to continue improving the efficiency of our courts and strengthening the judiciary."

"In the coming days, the nominations process will open and, subsequently, the four new members of the judiciary will be chosen. The choice will take place through the independent mechanism that was implemented by the Labour government," a statement by the ministry read.

Justice Minister Jonathan Attard said that the government is committee to providing all the necessary tools to continue ensuring that justice is done, that it is seen to be done, and takes place within a reasonable timeframe.

"This committment is already reflected in reports from foreign agencies, but we will not stop here. We will continue implementing significant reforms in the country's legal process," he said.

The news comes after Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti said during his speech for the opening of the forensic year on Monday morning, that the lack of resources is causing a lot of pressure, resulting in many delays.
