Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, said that he was content with how the Police Force dealt with the three police officers who have been charged with abducting and beating migrants.

In comments to the media, Camilleri said that the actions of the police officers being charged with abducting and beating migrants are “unacceptable and disgusting.”

He said that the Police Force will actively work so that cases like this will be reported immediately.

He said that he was content with the way the Police Force handled the situation because they were the ones to report the incident.

When asked whether there are any plans to conduct an internal report on the Police Force, he said that the police have already strengthened its structures and mentality for these police officers to be investigated.

He said that if there is a need for more information, then he does not see why an internal report should not take place.

He was also asked whether Malta’s hard-line stance on immigration policy has an effect on the police officers. Camilleri did not believe that this was the case, adding that Malta’s immigration policy is a just one.

He said that to prevent racist acts like this from happening in the future, the public must be better informed. He said that the government could do a bit more to educate the public in order to reduce racism.
