Nature Trust Malta has officially taken guardianship over the Romeo Romano Gardens to be used for educational purposes while keeping the garden open for the public.

WasteServ was in charge of the restoration of the garden as well as that of the adjacent building which would be used by Nature Trust for educational purposes.

Nature Trust president Vincent Attard stated that “this project stands as a continuous  learning environment where children can learn about the environment in the rooms being restored and then walk outside into the garden. This is not only an educational hub but also a place of relaxation.”

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said this was another public space that had been restored and given back to the people.

“This space is a testament to how much the government listens to the opinions of the people. In August we moved past plans to turn part of the garden into a kitchen garden and opted for this plan. Our children deserve to learn in open spaces and this garden being the second largest in Malta couldn’t be a better stage.”

Dalli said the renovations made at Romeo Romano gardens give the opportunity to more than 40,000 residents in walking distance the ability to access a green area.

“This is our commitment as we had stated in the budget and the electoral programme during the elections. The access to green areas without having to travel by car is vital and part of what we believe in.”

Dalli then explained how in other localities, pocket parks and gardens have already been opened and more recently, the first ever carbon neutral garden in Malta was opened. “This is not only part of our strategy moving forward but also a means to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Dalli then presided over the MoU signing between Nature Trust Malta and Wasteserv.
