Government to launch study on Wage Regulation Orders

Monday, 14 November 2022, 17:29 Last update: about 2 years ago

The government will, next year, launch a study regarding Wage Regulation Orders (WROs), Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul said.

The study will lead to certain legal anomalies being addressed, he added.

He said that in certain WROs, sick leave is given after a year that an employee would have worked in their role, while in others it is given after an employee would have been six months in employment.

He added that there are other WROs which specify that vacation leave cannot be taken before three months in employment. "This aside from the situation where WROs don't make reference to overtime, or discriminate between the sexes."

"The revision of WROs will take place so that workers and employers would be in a better position than they were before, even as the intention behind WROs is to provide specialised regulation according to the necessities of the sector in question," the Parliamentary Secretary said.

Ellul also said that a discussion with the social partners in the Employment Relations Board will take place to introduce regulations so that temporary employment agencies will be licensed and regulated.
