Malta Sociological Association appeals for national deliberation on abortion bill

The Malta Sociological Association (MSA) has appealed for a national process of deliberation on the controversial abortion bill amendment.

The recent abortion debate in Parliament discusses the government’s amendment to the abortion law, which will make abortion allowed in circumstances where a pregnant woman's life is at risk, or her health is in “grave jeopardy.” Government’s intention is to free doctors and pregnant women from the threat of criminal prosecution if a pregnancy is terminated for those reasons.

The PN, as well as many organisations and groups, are disagreeing with the proposal, arguing that its wording is too open and vague, specifically through the word, ‘health.’ They have argued that the amendment gives way for the introduction of abortion in Malta.

President Emeritus Marie Louise Coleiro Preca had said that there has yet to be a serious public discussion and consultation.

A protest against the current proposed cause will occur on Sunday, with anti-abortion groups endorsing an alternative clause made by a group of 80 experts, which ensures the protection of the doctor, and the baby.

The MSA said that it is conscious of the divergent positions on the matter, strongly urging for parliamentary consensus in favour of a national process of deliberation on the issue.

The MSA appealed for the deliberation to not only involve political parties and civil society organisations, but also experts in various fields as well as other stakeholders, including those who do not necessarily have high visibility in the public sphere.

“This process of deliberation can also recommend possible ways forward on this sensitive matter, including on how decisions can be taken in the legislative and policy processes,” it said.
