The Nationalist Party said Saturday that the Labour government has no mandate to introduce abortion, and so should withdraw the amendment that will open the way for abortion to take place legally.
In a statement, the PN urged the Maltese people to speak up against abortion and in favour of life.
It said it expects Prime Minister Robert Abela to withdraw the amendment as proposed, which will lead to the legalisation of abortion, because the PL has no mandate to do so. Abela should stop trying to impose a law which he knows the majority of the Maltese people are against.
What Abela is doing is irresponsible, anti-democratic and a threat to pregnant women, unborn children and health professionals.
The PN said that Labour entities should understand the great responsibility they carry and should stop Abela from legalising abortion.
The PN MPs are united in a message against abortion and are participating actively in the parliamentary debate on the subject. Academics, doctors, experts, former politicians from different sides, NGOs and the Church are all speaking up against the government’s plan.
In contrast, Labour MPs speaking in Parliament are avoiding the subject and instead firing attacks against anyone who is speaking up to protect life, the PN said.
