Wednesday, 18 January 2023, 19:30 Last update: about 2 years ago

Jeremie Camilleri was tasered by two police officers in the run-up to his arrest, a video capturing the dramatic moment shows.

The mobile phone footage by a bystander shows two police officers subduing the man, who was standing in the street taunting police right after he ran over a pedestrian and crashed his car into a catering establishment.

Camilleri, 33, escaped walked out of his BMW unscathed after he crashed into a fuel station and then a KFC restaurant in Gzira early in the morning on Wednesday.

The same sadly couldn’t be said about 30-year-old Pelin Kaya, who was killed when the BMW Camilleri was driving hit her.

Videos show that after Camilleri was aggressive with bystanders and people attemtping to help Kaya, he confronted police officers who shouted at him to get on his knees to be arrested.

Camilleri instead recoils backwards onto the ground as police approach, before getting up and turning away.  It is at this point that both officers use their tasers on Camilleri, subduing him and arresting him.

Sources told The Malta Independent that Camilleri was under the influence of cocaine at the time of the accident.

The 33-year-old, who was on probation after admitting to two petty thefts in which health supplements worth a total of €92 were stolen from Attard and Sliema on 2 January, 2023, is now at Mater Dei Hospital and will be interrogate by police once he is cleared by doctors.
