Premier League: Second half goals put Maroons back in second place

Gzira United scored three goals in the second half to send Marsaxlokk reeling to their fourth successive defeat, and move again to second place behind runaway leaders Hamrun Spartans. Gzira full deserved their victory against a side that is surely passing through a dull moment.

The match never reached high standards especially in the first half, but in the second period the Maroons scored two quick goals at the start and never looked back to return to winning ways after their draw in their last outing.

The first half was played at a very slow pace with Marsaxlokk having the first try at goal but Ferraris’ effort went well over the bar. On 20 minutes Aguirre seemed to handle the ball but referee Spiteri turned down Gzira’s appeals for a penalty. On 24 minutes a Maia header went wide and on the other end Peter Xuereb tested Zarkov.

Sixty seconds into the second half and Gzira broke the deadlock when Maia, well served by Cosic, crossed towards Jefferson De Assis who made no mistake from an ideal position. Three minutes later and the Maroons doubled the score when Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Drobnjak failed to grasp a harmless looking cross from Dias and Maxuell Maia was on hand to score from close range.

These two goals practically killed off Marsaxlokk’s hopes of obtaining something from this match and Gzira almost scored a third on 57 minutes, but goalkeeper Drobnjak made amends with a brilliant save off Kolega.

On the hour Marsaxlokk had an Aguirre grounder saved by Zarkov and three minutes later Gzira were unlucky not to score again when Drobnjak brilliantly saved Maia’s header and from the rebound the same Maia saw his shot finishing against the crossbar.

On 69 minutes Gzira however put the issue beyond doubt when Brazilian defender Bohrer scored direct from a freekick. Four minutes from time Gzira missed another opportunity with Nikolai Muscat failing to beat Drobnjak when well placed.
