2,000 migrants land in Lampedusa in 24 hours

More than 2,000 migrants have landed in Lampedusa in the last 24 hours, Italian media report.

Forty-three boats with 1,778 persons on board arrived on Friday, with another 267 arriving on six boats on the Italian island early on Saturday.

Italian media report that an NGO vessel rescued two vessles with 78 migrants from Guinea, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Mali.

The Italian Coast Guard assisted 40 migrants, including eight women and three children, who were on a boat in distress.

Another 43 migrants from Cameroon, Mali and Ivory Coast, including 14 woman and five minors, were found on Rabbit Island (Isola dei Conigli) off Lampedusa, with 42 migrants, including 12 women and one child, ending up on the beach of Cala Croce.
