A man who was critically injured on Saturday morning when he fell down the stairs of a residence in Mellieha died in hospital in the afternoon, the police said.

The man, aged 62, fell as he was carrying some objects.

The accident took place in Pietru Pawl Caruana Street at 10.15am.

He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital with serious injuries. He died some time later, the police said in a second statement.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella is leading an inquiry.
