During a visit to various communities, Prime Minister Robert Abela emphasized that the government will continue to take decisions that lead the country forward, address people's concerns and ultimately create a fairer society.
Abela visited Balzan and Qormi on Sunday morning, with the Labour Party saying in a statement that the Prime Minister listened to the people and also shared a message to the end that the government will continue to have the courage to keep taking decisions for a more just Malta.
“Our work, everything we do, must always be aimed at improving the sense of fairness in our country. Where citizens feel that they are living in a society where they are valued, where they will be evaluated on merit, where everyone walks forward together, not at the expense of others. But everyone walks forward together,” the Prime Minister said.
"This is also in the sense of unity, because a divided society can never be fair," continued the Prime Minister, who referred to the party’s Workers’ Day activity last week in Valletta as a clear signal in favour of this message.
The Prime Minister said that the government will continue to work to ensure that the economy continues to grow, but so that this is not the be all and end all and that it will be in accordance with the new priorities of the country.
Therefore, the Prime Minister said that reforms in planning must be carried out so that citizens feel that the systems are fair to them, where the voices of everyone are clearly heard.
"It is this sense of justice that is seeing us invest in opening up spaces. Because we know that a fair Malta is one where families spend time of need together, week after week," said the Prime Minister. He also noted that when one praises generosity and addresses people's concerns, one is also creating a more just society.
He referred to the tax refund scheme – the most recent round announced last week – where the government sends a check to all workers who earn less than €60,000 per year as recognition for their work.
This year, the scheme is the most extensive one yet, with an investment of €26 million – something which the PL said the Opposition speaks against.
The Prime Minister noted how the Opposition tries to downplay it as an isolated cheque that does not make a difference to justify why they are against this aid. But the Prime Minister explained how this is one of many initiatives for the whole population.
He referred to the challenges of inflation and said that the government is working to increase pensions and create more opportunities for workers, which will help to address these challenges.
Abela noted that this is why a new mechanism to deal with the pressures of cost of living on the most vulnerable families was implemented.
He said that this new mechanism saw the investment of €16 million for 48,000 families, adding: “Others used to burden the people with more weight, and say that it wouldn’t be prudent to carry out electoral promises. We didn’t burden anyone, and we will fulfil every promise we make.”
He ended by saying that his vision is to create a society where everyone feels valued and where the government is committed to creating a more just society.
