Sunshine Snacks’ popular products are now being made in a new factory in Mrieħel, with an investment of almost €7 million made by Consolidated Biscuits in Malta.
Economy Minister Silvio Schembri inaugurated the new factory today, describing Consolidated Biscuits as a success story in the Maltese industry.
The company partnered up with local stakeholders and shareholders from Trinidad 43 years ago to produce biscuits in Malta. Over time, along with the production line, the biscuits and crackers increased in number and were rebranded as Sunshine Snacks.
The company now employs 150 workers and exports to 25 countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, and Jordan.
“Foreign direct investment is one of the main factors in our economy, but in order to attract foreign investment, we need to create the necessary infrastructure in our industrial zones,” Schembri said, mentioning the ambitious government investment of €470 million in industrial infrastructure announced last year.
Schembri thanked INDIS Malta, the Central Business District as well as Malta Enterprise for their work and support.
INDIS Chairman Jean Pierre Attard said the entity not only provides support to new companies in Malta, but also to established companies like Consolidated Biscuits, which are expanding to help them achieve their goals.
“In this particular case, we wanted to allocate a site close to Consolidated Biscuits' existing factory, with the necessary infrastructure that aligns with our policy that vertical growth is more sustainable than horizontal growth,” Attard said, adding that in recent months, INDIS has completed projects to improve and modernize our industrial zones.
Consolidated Biscuits Chairman Alec Mizzi said this is an important day for the company as they continue to expand in a new, technologically advanced space.
While thanking the company's directors and employees, he also thanked INDIS and Malta Enterprise for their support to the company.
