The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, held a meeting with Government Whip Andy Ellul and Opposition Whip Robert Cutajar, aimed at improving collaboration and understanding between Parliament and the Office of the Ombudsman.

"The meeting formed part of a proactive approach taken by the Ombudsman to foster a better working relationship with the Public Administration and Parliament," a statement by the Ombudsman's Office read. "The Ombudsman insisted on the need for more substantial deliberation on reports sent to Parliament, which at present are just tabled and not debated."

"This matter also reflects the recent statement by the Speaker of the House, Hon Angelo Farrugia, emphasising the need to establish a mechanism for Parliament to discuss the Ombudsman's reports. All parties agreed on the importance of these meetings and committed themselves to holding them regularly. The purpose is to continually explore and implement ways to enhance the working relationship between the Ombudsman's Office and both Parliamentary Groups."

"This collaboration is anticipated to increase accountability, promote good governance, and further ensure the redress of injustices caused by public administration."
