An accident at the entrance to the Regional Road tunnels in St Julian's left four men injured, the police have confirmed.

The accident occurred at around 4.15pm on Tuesday on Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli, .

A Mercedes Sprinter van was seen smashed against the tunnel wall. The van was being driven by a 42-year-old man from St Paul's Bay.

the police found the driver, as well as three passengers inside. Members from the Civil Protection Department were called on site, as well as medical staff. They assisted in bringing the injured out of the vehicle and all four were taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

The driver was certified as having suffered slight injuries, while two passengers - a 31-year-old German and a 39-year-old man from Holland suffered grievous injuries. The condition of the other passenger, a 31-year-old from Nepal, is pending, the police said.

Reports originally read that a motorbike was involved, but the police confirmed that this was not the case.

The van had crashed straight into the tunnel's wall, witnesses said. The tunnel in the direction towards St Julian's was closed on Tuesday as a result with the traffic being diverted towards Ta' Giorni and San Gwann.
