The flyover at the Luqa Junction that leads traffic towards Qormi will be temporarily closed by the end of this week as work towards the finalization of the project continues.
“As much as possible, avoid passing through the Luqa junction project to go to Qormi,” Infrastructure Malta CEO Ivan Falzon said on Friday.
The flyover will be closed to carry out works on the southbound carriageway, and will then be open again towards the end of the month. Works include laying of asphalt in the southbound carriageway, installation of gantries for directional signage and application of line markings.
Falzon recommended that Tas-Sejba Road, Mqabba should be used as an alternative road.; This roadwill be completed on Saturday.
This road has always been problematic seeing four interventions over the past 20 years, Falzon said.
Falzon said that works on this road started on the second week of February, and the road was completely excavated and rebuilt by being held up by columns.
“We hope that this road does not give us more problems,” Falzon said.
Alternatively, to access Qormi, Falzon said that drivers can use Marsa Connection when travelling from the Tal-Barrani area towards Qormi.
Asked when the project will be completed he said that currently the project is nearing 80% completion, and people will feel start to experience the benefits of this project by the end of June. However, he said that the project will be fully functional in August.
Asked whether residents have complained about the works, he said that IM has received complaints from residents and it tries to hear them out. As a result, he said that excavation works are not carried out late at night, and if they had to work very late, they will only carry out line markings or apply asphalt which does not cause residents any inconvenience.
The Luqa Junction Project is to replace this locality’s principal roundabout with a multi-level junction facilitating quicker and safer connections between Qormi, Santa Lucija, Marsa, Gudja, the Airport, the Kirkop Tunnels and Birzebbuga.
