Following a meeting with Cabinet, eNGOs felt that the government still hasn't shown that it recognises the gravity of the environmental emergency in Malta.

Speaking outside Castille, Moviment Graffiti's Andre Callus said that discussions will continue and more meetings will take place to improve the current situation. However, the eNGOs and the government are still not seeing eye-to-eye on a number of points and Callus said that he was "disappointed that the government hasn't yet noticed the urgency."

ENGOs held a meeting with the government after thousands gathered in Valletta for the protest Xebbajtuna! Bidla fl-Ambjent u l-Ippjanar ISSA!, which called for environmental and planning reform. This protest was endorsed by over 80 groups, including residents' organisations from all over Malta and Gozo, University of Malta academics and many others.

Callus began by saying that the large turnout made it clear that Malta has an environmental problem and people want this to be solved.

During the meeting, many points regarding reforming planning policies and the problematic authorities that oversee Malta's environment were brought up, Callus said.

Regarding reforming policies, Callus said that for the most part, the government seemed to express its interest. However, when the topic of "defective authorities" was brought up, Callus said that the government did not show support in this aspect.

"This fight for the people will continue and we will continue pushing for the politicians to be on the side of us, the people, not the developers."

Executive President of Din l-Art Helwa Alex Torpiano reiterated that there will be further discussions, and highlighted the importance of these talks, as they were lacking.

"The reality is difficult, there are a lot of old policies. It is important that we all understand this emergency now."

Torpiano also pointed out just how important it is that government starts taking decisions which favour the people and not putting "money in pockets."
