WATCH: Prime Minister jeered upon exiting Castille during vigil

Tuesday, 18 July 2023, 11:04 Last update: about 12 months ago

Prime Minister Robert Abela was jeered by the crowds as he exited his office in Castille during a vigil for Jean Paul Sofia last night.

The Prime Minister emerged from the main door of Castille Palace while a vigil for Jean Paul Sofia was ongoing.  He had earlier announced the appointment of a public inquiry into Sofia’s death – bringing to an end months of government resistance to it.

Abela was escorted by police officers and bodyguards as he exited the building and walked round to his car.

He was met with jeers, shorts of “mafia” and “chicken” and various other expletives.

Once he entered his car, a person threw a bottle at it.

At the vigil, Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici had appealed for the crowd to remain non-political and thanked both the Prime Minister for accepting to hold a public inquiry and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech who had fronted the campaign in Parliament.

Grech accused Abela of “insensitive behaviour” by leaving Castille and walking into the crowds, saying that he would not be allowed to break the national unity.

“Robert, you have still not understood how to behave in delicate moments,” Grech said.
