Government still to fix pension anomalies - PN

Thursday, 27 July 2023, 10:53 Last update: about 4 years ago

There are many pensioners who are facing anomalies in their monthly pension, said the PN in a statement.

The Nationalist Party has already identified anomalies that exist in the pension of two thirds received by people born before and after 1962.

These anomalies have also been identified before the last general election.

In the party’s electoral program for the last general election it declared that a Nationalist Government would implement a package for pensions to address these injustices, which are putting pensioners at risk of poverty.

The Nationalist Party promised that "we will see that the 70/30 mechanism that is currently being used for the increase to pensioners born after December 31, 1961 is used for all pensioners" they said.

The PN highlighted that the Minister for social Policy Micheal Falzon in a statement said that the government has been negotiating to remove the  present distinction in pensions between people who were born before and after 1962.

In the same statement, the minister said that he understands the concerns of the Pensioners Association and the situation of the people involved and therefore his ministry to fix the anomalies.

Given that these measures should have been revisited every five years, the opposition is urging the Ministry to share these measures as “ it would be good to know what measures the Minister is contemplating.”

The Nationalist Party demands that the solutions should be those for 2023, “which really help today's pensioner.”

The statement was signed by PN spokesperson for Social policy David Aguis, PN spokesperson for active aging Paula Mifsud Bonnici and the Nationalist Pensioners and Elderly Association - APAN
