The Birgu local council has completed beautification and restoration works for the recreational space found in St. Edward Street.

This was done through an investment of just over €40,000 through the scheme titled 'Financing for the development and improvement of playing field conditions in localities'.

Commencing in 2022, the scope of these works was for the local council to continue fostering sport and active recreation in order to continue promoting quality of life, a government statement read. According to the local council, having and maintaining recreational zones at the heart of localities are vital in these efforts.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Councils Alison Zerafa Civelli praised the Birgu local council's commitment and dedication in accomplishing this project. She said that local councils are most aware of the needs of their respective localities and that it is with this purpose that the government continues to provide local councils with the necessary resources they require.

"Through projects like this in the heart of localities, local councils are complementing and supporting the government's mission to bolster a better environment and in favour of green recreational spaces", Civelli stated.

This project consisted of incorporating an elastic carpet beneath the entire area, adding a gate at the space's entrance, implementing CCTV cameras for added security, and also installing new lights. The local council also purchased equipment necessary to upkeep the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the recreational space.

Birgu mayor John Boxall said that continued upkeep of this recreational space, as well as the ability for the local council to continue investing towards better security and accessibility, was made possible due to additional funds it has received.
