Prime Minister Robert Abela said Thursday the Government will invest in more modern health centres to provide more resources and better working conditions for health professionals since investment in primary healthcare is crucial towards having healthier communities.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Chris Fearne, the Prime Minister was visiting the Birkirkara Health Centre to see how it has been modernized, according to a Department of Information statement. Works on the Health Centre concluded this July following a €1.1 million investment through National Development and Social Funds.
Aside from providing general primary care, the Birkirkara Health Centre is also known for having a specialized podiatry centre. The centre is also equipped with a warehouse that holds supplies of medical equipment for all other health centres. The Prime Minister met all professionals, nurses and employees working at the centre, and heard from patients what continuous investment can do for their health. Around 35,000 residents from Birkirkara, Balzan, Iklin, and Lija can enjoy this centre.
The Prime Minister described how investments done at the heart of localities in various sectors is central to the Government’s policy to work for the common good and a fairer Malta. In a month since its opening, the centre has offered its services towards more than 5000 persons, ranging from a family doctor’s clinic, a baby clinic, eye care services, amongst others.
Abela thanked all the centre’s employees for their continued work for patients in need of care and for their sustained professional communication with patients as well, saying that this communication is important in gaining incoming patients’ trust on entry into the Health Centre.
The modernization programme to improve primary healthcare and community clinics is supported by the €10 million National Development and Social Fund (NDSF). The aim behind this investment is to ensure that patients enjoy the best possible care that is also close to their homes.
Also present was Birkirkara mayor Joanne Debono Grech and the CEO of Primary HealthCare Roseanne Camilleri. Following this visit, the Prime Minister met various members within Birkirkara’s local community by visiting a number of businesses to hear out the aspirations and needs of the people.
