Planning application for restoration of San Anton Gardens filed by Project Green

Friday, 1 September 2023, 14:08 Last update: about 3 years ago

Following the completion of various conservation studies on San Anton Gardens, Project Green announced in a statement that the agency has submitted an application to the Planning Authority so that restoration works at the Presidential Gardens may begin.

A study of the site incorporated the first phase of the San Anton Gardens project. During this opening project phase, every metre of the Gardens was examined, it said. By doing so, the relevant authorities identified the methodology for the conservation works of the garden walls and passages, and also recognized the architectural features that contribute to the Gardens' identity, such as fountains and monuments.

Alongside the conservation of the Gardens, a conservatory shall be built in place of the existing greenhouse. New cages shall also be manufactured amongst other planned works.

The conservation study was a requirement imposed by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage due to the nature of the site, Project Green said; San Anton Gardens has the highest level of protection due to its nature and historical value.

The site, due to its unique nature, requires an extensive tendering process which Project Green has begun drafting, it said. "This is being done so that the call for tenders can be issued immediately after the necessary permits are approved."

For this project, Project Green is collaborating with Ambjent Malta - the agency in charge of the garden's maintenance.

President George Vella and Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef had previously called on government to give San Anton Gardens some much needed tender loving care back in 2021.
