Malta's role as the leader on the ILGA Europe index is a reflection on the remarkable journey of love's triumph over hate and the relentless pursuit of equality, Prime Minister Robert Abela said during the EuroPride opening ceremony on Thursday night.

Abela acknowledged the significance of Malta hosting EuroPride, emphasizing the country's first-place standing on the ILGA Europe index. He said that this achievement was the result of a long and challenging journey, one filled with skepticism and obstacles. Malta's story is a testament to the power of love, courage, and the unwavering determination to overcome inequality, he said.

Fifty years ago, Malta took a significant step when it decriminalized same sex relationships, signaling that it would no longer imprison citizens "for who they chose to love". However, progress remained slow for the next four decades. It was only through the tireless efforts of activists and the conviction of the people that a civil rights revolution was ignited, he said.

Abela said he believes that love conquers all, emphasizing that love and respect know no boundaries. The fight for equality, he asserted, is an ongoing battle, and one that must be waged daily.

Malta's aspiration is to ensure that every individual can pursue their dreams and find happiness in their homeland, whether in the tranquil landscapes of Gozo or the vibrant life of Malta itself, he added. Abela said that Malta would continue to be a progressive force, steadfast in its resolve to eliminate discrimination once and for all.

Despite achievements, the Prime Minister acknowledged that there is still work to be done. He said that Malta will continue to lead the charge for a society free from discrimination, committed to embracing everyone.

In closing, he urged attendees to celebrate "equality from their hearts", demonstrating respect and love for all. He extended a hand of solidarity to those who still struggle to live as they wish, assuring them of Malta's open arms. In a final call to action, he urged everyone to work together to build a society that does not judge but loves, because Malta belongs to everyone.
