Updated: People promised social housing before last election still have still not received it - PN

Friday, 8 September 2023, 11:59 Last update: about 4 years ago

People who signed social housing contracts a few days before the last election still haven't received it, the PN said.

"They took their vote, and a year and a half later, they haven't gotten a housing unit, nor a response," the PN said.

Newsbook's had reported that scores of government housing units had been promised to various families in the weeks before last year's general election, with some lamenting that they're still in the dark.

The PN said that when it suits government, authorities refer to the protection of personal information of individuals with an excuse not to provide the requested details.

"They say that it is 'sensitive information' even if the requested information is generic."

Despite this situation, the PN said that Galdes addressed a news conference to announce how many cases of structural repairs have been carried out in social housing apartments. "A service that has always existed and that has taken place under each Minister since the beginning of the establishment of the Housing Authority."

The PN continued by saying how those who signed a contract and are still out of social housing are still to hear from authorities. "The new owners were promised that they will move into their apartment in a few weeks, but so far, nothing."

The PN said it has been asking for years about the new apartments that were to be ready five years ago, to which in its reply the Government said that " the new ones are expected to be ready in 2021."

PL says PN was only party to break promises on new social housing

The only party in government who promised new social housing accommodation and didn't keep its word was the PN, the Labour Party said in response.

"Around Malta 20 projects of social accommodation are ongoing, meaning more than 1,000 social housing apartments. These projects are in Cospicua, Kirkop, Msida, Qrendi, Siggiewi, Luqa, Marsascala, Mellieha, Paola, Zabbar and Zebbug. Because the Labour government keeps its word, hundreds of apartments of social housing are already done," the PL said.

"These buildings are being done through work of the highest quality."

"Under the PN, the Housing Authority had a financial package of €2 million and seven schemes. Today, the Housing Authority has a budget of €40 million and 15 schemes, and another budget of €150 million for the construction of social housing buildings."

Over the past years, the PL said, the government began regenerating and consucting maintenance work on social housing "that a PN government had abandoned for years." The PL said that more than €6 million was invested by the Housing Authority to do maintenance and regeneration work on social housing in the last year and a half.
