Stefan Carbonaro, Bewsa 2023

Sunday, 17 September 2023, 08:45 Last update: about 10 days ago

Stefan Carbonaro specialises in mixed media paintings, mostly acrylics and oil on canvas. Recent work has been explored in large vibrant abstracts with powerful textures, creating a unique combination of artworks, characterised by the juxtaposition of colour and 'non-colour' surfaces, including dynamic movement and static shapes with powerful expressive and gentle strokes. Primarily a self taught artist, Carbonaro has developed his skills by continuously experimenting and developing new techniques, often dissecting things within the work so as to spark thought within the viewer, enticing deeper reflections. The audience can find an entry point into the work as they are exposed to a body of work which provokes the notion of perception, where one feels familiar with something without being able to decipher it. It is here that one becomes immersed in the work, offering a space where one is surrounded by complete abstraction, where personal reflection and interpretation reign.

Bewsa, meaning a kiss in Maltese, is a gesture of gratitude towards life, a life with its many facets of beautiful experiences and other challenging ones. Bewsa is an enchanting collection of abstract paintings that blends the allure of Fire, the grace of Water, and the intimacy of a timeless kiss. The interplay of vibrant hues and profound darkness, through the use of negative space, creates a symphony of emotions with flickering tongues of deep orange and gold. Fire symbolises the passion that sparks within, whilst serene waves of aquamarine water and sea evoke the ebb and flow of human emotions. It is the human will that can change and overcome difficult moments into experiences where one can appreciate life and the beautiful moments that one goes through. A continuous fight between fire and water, a transition between dark to light. Within this captivating collection the viewers can find themselves immersed in a timeless journey through the elements and the depths of human connections.

The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 08:00 to 17:00 at the main offices of MAPFRE MSV Life in The Mall, Triq il-Mall, Floriana, and will close on 29th September.
