Three new superior court judges have been appointed, a statement by the Office of the President reads.
They are Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras, Dr Henri Mizzi and Dr. Mark Simiana. They will now need to take the oath.
The Office of the President of Malta detailed how these three were chosen. It said that Justice Minister Jonathan Attard, on 11 July, had issued a public call for expressions of interest for the posts of three superior court judges.
The Judicial Appointments Committee received a total of 17 expressions of interest.
The committee evaluated all candidates and deliberated the recommendations it needed to make to the President. On 20 September, the Committee's secretary presented the President with "detailed reports regarding the candidates who were recommended as being suitable and meritorious for the post of superior court judges by the committee, which included detailed evaluations of every candidate the committee felt were most suitable and meritorious."
According to law, superior court judges are appointed by the President, acting on the recommendations of the committee. The statement by the President's Office read that on clear indications by the committee as to who were the most suitable candidates for the posts, the President announced the aforementioned three names
The President praised the new judges and thanked the committee members for their work.
While the aforementioned three were selected, six other candidates were also listed as having been considered suitable by the committee for the appointment - Magistrates Charmaine Galea and Claire Stafrace Zammit, and lawyers Franca Giordmaina, Jean Paul Grech, Simone Grech, Ann Marie Thake
